The Relevance of Introspection - For Love of Writers

The Relevance of Introspection

The journey of self-improvement is a long and exciting path with numerous doors and windows to explore. The beauty of this journey is that there is no right or wrong way; the only way to attain the goals you set for yourself is by experimenting and evaluating what works best for you. Although therapy is often the first thing that comes to mind when considering self-improvement, finding the right professional can be daunting, especially when access to mental health resources varies based on geographic location. That’s where introspection comes into the picture.

Why should you introspect?

There are various tools that you can use to help you manage your thoughts and emotions. Introspection is an excellent place to start and involves looking inward to gain self-awareness and personal knowledge. According to Kendra Cherry, emotions play an important role in the way we think and behave, and developing the capacity to handle your emotions can help you become (and stay) motivated, understand yourself and others, and avoid getting in harmful or stressful situations.

Introspection can be a challenging and revealing experience, but there is no one-size-fits-all approach to it. Instead, mental health professionals suggest reflecting and questioning yourself to develop greater self-awareness, gain personal insights, connect with past experiences, and improve empathy.

How should you introspect?

If you’re interested in practicing introspection, there are a few things you can do to start. First, spend more time alone, cultivate your curiosity, and begin questioning yourself. Ask yourself why a particular behavior is bothering you so much or whether there’s something more complex going on. With introspection, you can let your thoughts take you to places in your mind that you may not have considered before. It’s essential to remember that this technique has no quick fix; it’s a matter of consistency, not quantity.

An obvious question arises: “ What should I ask myself?” Well, Courtney Ackerman, in her 2017 article, has a list of 87 questions you can ask yourself. However, there is no need to get through all of them. It’s more of a conversation starter, and once you begin, the rest of the activity will be easier.

Here are some good questions to begin with:

  • Am I living true to myself?
  • Am I using my time wisely?
  • Am I achieving the goals that I’ve set for myself?
  • Who am I?
  • Why do I matter?
  • What am I scared of?
  • What had I given up on?
  • Is it more important to love or be loved?
  • What is life asking for me?
  • My favourite way to spend the day is…
  • I cannot imagine living without…

Takeaways

It’s crucial not to obsess over the process of introspection. Instead, take it slow and steady. Understanding ourselves not only enhances our mental health, but also gives us perspective in life and about the decisions we are making. The goal is not to complete an endless questionnaire about your emotions and thoughts, but to ask the right questions and do the necessary work to understand ourselves. With introspection, it is easy to fool yourself into finding some deep insight, and hence, it is important to maintain a healthy practice of introspection.

Practising introspection and gaining self-awareness will help you become better at communicating and  make you more confident, as well as enhance your overall perspective and help you make better choices. As you ask yourself more questions, you will experience a curiosity about yourself and about the things that bring you joy. It will also reveal the way your life is developing.

These tools will help you identify things you are comfortable with and things that make you insecure or uncomfortable. You will develop greater self-awareness with patience, persistence, and self-reflection, leading to a more fulfilling life.
