There’s a Time and Place for Everything

Recently, I came across a video of two people committing a lewd act in a bowling alley. This tweet made me think about how far people are willing to go just for some online attention.

Social media has been very popular since the early 2000s, and we should not expect to see its popularity fade anytime soon.

Apps such as Twitter give people the chance to express their opinions and relatable thoughts. TikTok enables people to create short relatable skits, dance to mixes of their favorite songs, and be creative with different challenges. YouTube gives people a platform on which to broadcast themselves through vlogs, story times, commentary, and reviews, and to create videos on countless other topics. Instagram allows users to share what goes on in their lives through pictures and videos.

We have all seen how powerful social media can be, as it has led to the popularity of many well-known influencers, and we have even seen celebrities take advantage of social media’s popularity by posting content on different apps.

A common thing we’ve seen influencers do is use their new-found popularity to garner more opportunities for themselves through brand deals, acting gigs and record deals, and even enter into the sports world, like the Paul brothers.

Being active on social media has many other positives. They include connecting with loved ones who live far away and finding jobs through apps like LinkedIn. Social media is also a great educational tool for students and it has even helped law enforcement crackdown on illegal activities.

In the same way that humans have their good and bad qualities, however, the same can be said of social media.

Although social media can be an escape from the real world for some, the same cannot be said for others. Social media has made bullying more prevalent as people are able to take their mistreatment of others to the internet.

In Canada, seven per cent of adults have been bullied online. The most common forms of cyberbullying are through email and direct messages.

There have been YouTube videos of influencers and YouTubers being exposed for scamming their fans to continue to afford a life filled with luxury.

The most common issues we see are what people are willing to do to achieve greater numbers of likes, views, and comments.

It’s an amazing feeling when people gain a lot more likes and views than they would usually get on their posts. This milestone makes them want to work harder towards achieving the same success continuously.

But achieving clout by making light of very serious topics, pulling certain types of pranks on others (especially strangers), doing activities at someone else’s expense, and posting NSFW (not safe for work) content is not the way to go.

There’s nothing new under the sun about couples expressing their love for one another in public. People have moments when they can’t help it, and that’s okay. When out in a public setting, however, they need to be mindful of what they chose to do.

Holding hands, kissing, and giving hugs in public — and posting videos and pictures of these acts — are considered acceptable, but taking part in anything beyond that publicly and posting it online is not.

Although most bowling alleys are open until midnight, they are also popular places for children to spend time with their families and celebrate their birthdays with their friends.

It’s already bad enough when young children, who only want to enjoy a birthday party, are subjected to something that is not for children’s eyes. It’s even worse when pictures and videos of inappropriate acts are posted on the internet for many more eyes to see.

It’s not a smart idea to post explicit content on social media, because once something is posted, it will be up there forever. Committing a lewd act is also against the law. And when people break the law, there are serious consequences. These consequences can include jail time and/or having to pay a fine.

Companies also have their reputations to protect. So, if one were to do something that their company considered inappropriate, and their employer came across it, their job could be in jeopardy.

Go ahead and have fun with your significant other when out in public. Just remember that certain things do not need to be done in public or even posted online.
